DoyleBrunsonFans.com Doyle Brunson Knocked Out Of 2006 WSOP

31 July, 2006

Las Vegas is in shock: Phil Hellmuth Jr. and Doyle Brunson knocked out of the main event of the world series of poker Saturday. Hellmut lasted only 6 hours into the first day. After arriving late, as usual, he sat down in his seat with about 9,000 in chips remaining of his starting 10,000. After the incredible run of bad luck he was unable to endure, I'm sure he wished he was even later. Phil lost the majority of his chips on 3 hands. First his pair of jacks failed to hold up against queens, then he lost on kings to a pair of aces, and finally he went all in with ace queen versus an opponents pocket 7's. The ace or queen never came, and it was time for Phil to go home. "Horrendous, horrendous luck, I'm still half in shock." Hellmuth said.

Doyle Brunson lasted about 5 hours longer than Hellmuth. Brunson was honored by all in attendance when he arrived and they played "thanks for the memories", then he was handed the microphone to give the dealers their cue to get things started. "Shuffle up and Deal" Brunson said. This was Doyles 30th World Series of poker entry. He is currently tied with Johnny Chan and Phil Hellmuth Jr. with TEN World Series of Poker bracelets.

Brunsons final hand lost when he went all in with a pair of nines that lost to trip 10's. "It never feels good to go out, but at some point, you've got to try to win some pots. If you don't, you're just wasting your time, so that's what I did" said Brunson.

Seeing Hellmuth go out so early was a bit disappointing for me, but not as much so as seeing Doyle go. There is always next year for both guys, but at Brunsons age, you have to wonder how many more next years we will get the pleasure of seeing him play.
