Doyle Brunson Knocked Out Of 2006 WSOP

31 July 2006

Las Vegas is in shock: Phil Hellmuth Jr. and Doyle Brunson knocked out of the main event of the world series of poker Saturday. Hellmut lasted only 6 hours into the first day. After arriving late, as usual, he sat down in his seat with about 9,000 in chips remaining of his starting 10,000. After the incredible run of bad luck he was unable to endure, I'm sure he wished he was even later. Phil lost the majority of his chips on 3 hands. First his pair of jacks failed to hold up against queens, then he lost on kings to a pair of aces, and finally he went all in with ace queen versus an opponents pocket 7's. The ace or queen never came, and it was time for Phil to go home. "Horrendous, horrendous luck, I'm still half in shock." Hellmuth said.

Doyle Brunson lasted about 5 hours longer than Hellmuth. Brunson was honored by all in attendance when he arrived and they played "thanks for the memories", then he was handed the microphone to give the dealers their cue to get things started. "Shuffle up and Deal" Brunson said. This was Doyles 30th World Series of poker entry. He is currently tied with Johnny Chan and Phil Hellmuth Jr. with TEN World Series of Poker bracelets.

Brunsons final hand lost when he went all in with a pair of nines that lost to trip 10's. "It never feels good to go out, but at some point, you've got to try to win some pots. If you don't, you're just wasting your time, so that's what I did" said Brunson.

Seeing Hellmuth go out so early was a bit disappointing for me, but not as much so as seeing Doyle go. There is always next year for both guys, but at Brunsons age, you have to wonder how many more next years we will get the pleasure of seeing him play.

WSOP Main Event Begins Today

28 July 2006

The 2006 World Series of Poker Main Event is schedualed to begin today, hosted at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. The 2006 Main Event boasts he largest field of participants ever gathered for a single live poker event. The $10,000 buy-in, No-Limit Texas Hold'em World Championship will pay a whopping top prize of more than $10.8 million to the winner.

The World Series of Poker is the largest, richest and most sought-after live poker event in the entire world. This years record field of more than 8,000 players will guarantee an overall event prize pool of over $75 million dollars. Totaled with the other events at this year's World Series of Poker, the complete prize pool for all events will reach $150 million.

For the 2005 World Series of Poker, 5,619 players were entered in the Main Event. World Champion Joseph Hachem of Melbourne, Australia, took home the $7.5 million first place prize.

The final table of the $10,000 No-Limit Texas Hold'em World Championship will begin on August 10th.

"This year's World Series of Poker is turning out to be the biggest and best ever with record-breaking participation and a global field of players from more than 50 countries," said World Series of Poker Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack. "Everyone is here with the hope of winning a bracelet, and we're seeing dreams come true and poker history unfold."

The 46-event schedule at the 37th annual World Series of Poker has included multiple sell-outs and three separate events prior to the Main Event that attracted more than 2,700 players. It has featured the youngest player to ever win a World Series of Poker gold bracelet - 21-year-old Jeff Madsen, who quickly went on to become the youngest player ever to win two gold bracelets.

At the other end of the spectrum, 80-year-old Kuei Chi Chang, who had never played tournament poker prior to this year's World Series of Poker, finished in the money twice in a matter of days. The Las Vegas resident finished 52nd out of a whopping 1,068 players in one event and 42nd out of 415 in another.

Another highlight came earlier this week when Phil Hellmuth, Jr. made history by becoming just the third person in World Series of Poker history to win a 10th gold bracelet. He joins poker legends Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan as the only individuals to achieve this milestone.

Through the first 38 events, the 37th annual World Series of Poker has generated 35,727 total player registrations, surpassing the previous record of more than 32,000 set last year. With the addition of the Main Event, total player registrations in 2006 will be nearly 44,000.

Doyle Brunson: Poker's Living Legend

22 July, 2006

Doyle Brunson is to poker what Babe Ruth was to baseball -- a larger-than-life giant of a man who not only helped to revolutionize and popularize the game he loved, but set the standard for achievement and excellence by which all other players are measured. Brunson won the World Series of Poker twice, but is perhaps better known for his greater contributions to the game.

Twenty-five years ago, he co-wrote what has been called the "Bible" of poker -- "Super/System: How I Made Over $1,000,000 Playing Poker." He also pioneered higher virtues as one of the first respected voices in gambling to discuss the importance of honor and trust amongst his peers. Brunson came to personify the notion that gambling could be a respectable profession.

From his humble beginnings, there was little evidence to suggest this farm boy from the dusty plains of West Texas would become one of the world' most successful gamblers. Brunson was born in Longworth, Texas on August 10, 1933. He was so gifted athletically in his early years, that he was drafted by the NBA's (then, Minneapolis) Lakers.

A knee injury ended Brunson's dream of becoming a professional athlete, so he had to find a new way to satisfy his competitive instincts. He would soon find it after graduating from college with a Master's Degree in Education. Brunson hung up his basketball uniform and sat down at a poker table. And the rest, as they say -- is history.

Brunson became a "Rounder", making the rounds from one poker game to the next. It was a colorful, but dangerous way to make a living. Along the way, he met other men who would later become poker legends in their own rite -- including Johnny Moss, Sailor Roberts, and "Amarillo Slim" Preston (with a combined eight world championships between all of them). In the early 1960s, Brunson married his sweetheart, Louise. Together, they had four children.

The family moved to Las Vegas after Brunson found invitations to poker games increasingly difficult to come by, as he repeatedly won the most money from the games back in Texas. Once he was firmly established in Las Vegas, Brunson won the World Series of Poker twice -- in 1976 and 1977. Incredibly, he won both years with the exact same poker hand, a full house -- tens full of deuces -- giving the hold'em hand "10-2" the rightful nickname, "a Doyle Brunson." When Brunson wrote his book "Super/System," which would become an instant classic, many of his fellow poker pros were outraged that he would give away the secrets to beating the games.

While the games surely did become more difficult over the years that followed, a far more significant result was a greater public interest in poker, and more players wanting to play for higher-stakes. "Super/System" sparked a new wave of books on strategy that fueled greater public interest in poker. Brunson's next contribution to the game was another book, "According to Doyle" -- which was a collection of his best columns written for the old Gambling Times magazine.

The book is a series of reflections and philosophical musings about what it takes to be successful in gambling. Again, Brunson was a trailblazer -- introducing notions that gambling was a legitimate profession and that all true gamblers had an obligation to conduct themselves honorably. In the 1980s, Brunson became just as well known for his antics out on the golf course, as at the poker table. He played golf for astronomical sums of money.

He once commented: "The guys out on the pro golf tour don't compete for the amount of money we bet on a single round." Brunson also bet huge sums in the sportsbooks. He frequently bet five-figures or more on a single sporting event. It was (and is) not uncommon for Brunson to have a quarter of a million dollars in wagers "in action" on the day's games.

To date, Brunson has nine gold bracelets at the World Series of Poker. But his real claim to fame may be his success in cash games where he has been "The Man" for nearly five decades. He can still be found on a daily basis playing in the highest-stakes games in the world -- winning and occasionally losing more money in a single pot than the average working person makes in a year's salary. Now, approaching his 70th birthday -- Doyle Brunson shows absolutely no signs of slowing down.
